ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA ROLAND BARTHES TERHADAP SIMBOL ALAM LAFADZ AL-MĀ’ (AIR) DALAM QS. AL-ANBIYA AYAT 30

Abstract

This study examines the symbol of al-Mā’ (water) in Qur'an Q.S. al-Anbiyā’ verse 30 through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach in order to reveal the layered structure of meaning consisting of denotation, connotation, and myth. The main objective of this research is to reinterpret water not merely as a biological element, but also as a theological, cosmological, and ideological symbol within the Qur’anic construction of meaning. This study employs a qualitative semiotic analysis method by examining classical Qur’anic exegesis alongside modern semiotic theory. The findings show that at the denotative level, water signifies the fundamental source of life. At the connotative level, water represents fertility, sustainability, and divine mercy, reflecting the existential relationship between human beings and God. At the mythological level, water functions as an ideological signifier that naturalizes the Qur’anic worldview concerning creation and the dependence of all creatures upon God. The study concludes that Barthes’ semiotic theory is effective in uncovering the symbolic depth of Qur’anic texts and contributes to the enrichment of thematic interpretation through an interdisciplinary approach that connects classical exegetical heritage with contemporary theory.
