PERAN PONDOK PESANTREN DALAM MENGHADAPI ERA GLOBALISASI: STUDI ETNOGRAFIS DI PESANTREN PERSATUAN ISLAM 19 BENTAR GARUT
Main Article Content
Abstract
Globalization has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of education, including Islamic education institutions such as pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The rapid development of digital technology, global flows of information, and shifting socio-cultural values pose both challenges and opportunities for pesantren to adapt without losing their religious identity. This study aims to examine in depth the role of Pondok Pesantren Persatuan Islam (Persis) Bentar Garut in responding to the dynamics of globalization. Employing a qualitative approach with an ethnographic research design, this study is enriched by a phenomenological perspective to capture the lived experiences of pesantren actors. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with pesantren leaders, teachers, and students, as well as document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically and interpretively using the theoretical frameworks of globalization, modernization, and integrative Islamic education. The findings reveal that Pesantren Persis Bentar Garut responds to globalization through four main strategies: (1) strengthening Persis ideology as a foundation of institutional identity, (2) developing an integrated curriculum that combines religious and formal education, (3) selectively utilizing digital technology for learning and da‘wah activities, and (4) fostering students’ character development oriented toward moral discipline, religious commitment, and moderation. This study demonstrates that pesantren are not passive recipients of globalization but active agents that negotiate global influences through local religious values and organizational ideology. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on Islamic education by highlighting pesantren’s adaptive capacity and the central role of ideology in shaping educational responses to globalization.
