Abstract

This article discusses the method for identifying 'illah (hidden disease) in hadith, which is recognized by scholars as very difficult. However, this does not at all show that the science of 'Ilal al-Ḥadīth is unscientific and does not have a clear methodological framework. After conducting research using the library research method, it is clear that there are scientific steps and stages that can be carried out to conclude whether a hadith is divine or not. There are at least two types of methods for identifying 'illah, namely global methods and detailed methods. Methods and steps for detecting 'illah in hadith, which tend to be global, are usually predominantly carried out by classical 'ilal al-ḥadīth expert scholars, although there are also several contemporary hadith researchers who follow them. Meanwhile, more detailed methods and steps are offered by contemporary hadith researchers, which can be evidence of developments in the scientific knowledge of hadith.
